Release Notes

2025-Q1 #

Here’s what’s new in Version 1.4, released May 20, 2025 #

  • Fix to address incorrect reporting locations for the oil and natural gas sector
    • Onshore petroleum and natural gas production and gathering and boosting facilities report aggregated emissions at the basin level, but frequently use the address of their U.S. corporate headquarters building as their reporting address. This results in headquarters buildings being incorrectly attributed for emissions occurring in a basin that may not be physically near the headquarters
    • This fix removes emissions from onshore petroleum and natural gas production and gathering and boosting facilities, as reported in EnviroFacts
    • Emissions from onshore petroleum and natural gas production and associated industry are already reported at the basin level, therefore this fix does not remove a source sector of emissions

Version 1.3, released April 11, 2025 #

  • Emissions data available for year 2024
  • Higher resolution mapping of area-normalized emissions across the United States
  • Toggle feature for normalizing emissions estimates by population and visualizing change over time in a histogram
  • Improved emissions estimation models:
    • Refined Agricultural Emissions by removing burning crops to reduce artificial spikes (especially relevant to the state of Hawaii’s estimates)
    • EGU (energy generating units) Hindcast Fixes: Aligned locations pre-2012 with EIA data
    • Stabilized Forecast Ratios: Capped high EIA ratio values
    • Updated Base Year to 2023 to use latest EIA SEDS (State Energy Data System) data for projections
    • Added Biofuels/Renewables to AEO: Included previously missing projections for electricity generation.
    • Smoothed NEI Data: Adjusted smoothing logic to match EIA fuel consumption trends
    • Addressed missing data for airports in ingested FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) data

2024-Q3 #

Version 1.2, released December 10, 2024 #

  • Data visualized in an interactive map with two views: area normalized and census tracts (census block group available with login credentials)
  • Scope 1 (direct emissions) sectors available: commercial buildings, industrial buildings, residential buildings, transportation
  • Scope 2 (emissions from electricity consumption) sectors available: total
  • Additional Scope 1 (direct emissions) sectors available with login credentials: airports, vehicles, power plants, mobile equipment, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, residential buildings, other
  • Additional Scope 2 (emissions from electricity consumption) sectors available with login credentials: commercial buildings, industrial buildings, residential buildings
  • Download CSV containing emissions inventories for: US Census Tracts, US Census Places (Cities), US Counties, US States, US County Subdivisions
